The Security Research Event (SRE) is the recurring meeting where policy makers, security practitioners, researchers, industry and civil society come together to discuss the state of play of security research in Europe. Organised by European Commission, the 2023 SRE brought together over 1000 participants. They discussed how global megatrends are shifting the ground for security in the EU, as reflected in the event’s title: “Societal transformation, digitalisation and climate change – a new paradigm for Security Research?”.

The SRE2023 was opened by a video message from Commissioner Johansson underlining the role of EU security research in making our society more resilient and by two Keynote Speeches from Francisco Pardo Piqueras and Svante Werger, representatives of the 2023 Council presidencies of the EU and co-organisers of the SRE: Spain and Sweden.

After the three speeches, SRE continued with the High Level Round Table in which the policy context was set and thoughts for thematic panels of the event were provided. Experts were brought together on stage to discuss different topics related to security research in 5 different panels over the 2 days of the event.

In addition to the conference, an exhibition complemented by demos from selected EU projects, was organised with over 40 EU-funded security research projects presenting their results. This event was also the occasion to celebrate the Security Innovation Award 2023, recognising the best innovators operating in EU-funded security research, as well as their significant success in market uptake of research results.
